Looking to continue your education?

Do you want to learn a trade? Earn an undergraduate or graduate degree? Go back to school after taking time off?

Each year, Modern Woodmen awards up to $150,000 to help members ages 21 and older do just that. Up to 150 grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to qualified members headed back to school in the fall of 2026.

An independent panel of judges selects winners based on content (not grammar/style) of responses to short-answer questions, as described on the application site.

How do I qualify?

To be eligible to compete, you must:

  • Be a high school graduate (or equivalent), age 21 or older.
  • Be a Modern Woodmen member, covered by Modern Woodmen life insurance or an annuity for at least one year as of Jan. 1 of the year the scholarship is awarded.*
  • Plan to do one of the following for the upcoming fall term:
    • Enroll full time or part time in an undergraduate- or graduate-level of study at an accredited two- or four-year college or university.
    • Attend a trade, vocational or technical school.

Past recipients of any Modern Woodmen scholarship and Modern Woodmen employees (including current and retired field representatives) are ineligible. Family members, including spouses and children, are eligible.

*The life insurance certificate must be on a premium-paying basis or must be paid-up according to the terms of the certificate, other than through use of the nonforfeiture option. The annuity must be a Modern Woodmen fixed or variable annuity.

How to apply

Submit your application online (link to come this fall).

Applications open Nov. 1 each year and are due the first Monday in February. (View the application website for the specific date.) Winners will be notified in April.
